Explorer Accelerated: What’s New for Ford’s Electric Icon?

Our Explorer 1 electric SUV is designed to be adventure-ready; equipped to deal with the everyday and help you get the most from your leisure time.

We’re always looking for ways to make the Explorer experience even better. Our latest improvements include advanced tech upgrades as well as a distinctive new version for more choice and an even more confidence-inspiring driving experience.

Q: What are the most significant updates to the Explorer line-up?

A: Explorer Collection is a new addition to the range and the latest model in the Ford Collection. It’s designed to be the ultimate expression of Explorer’s active adventure spirit, and takes inspiration from sporting equipment with its unique design, colour and materials.

Explorer Standard Range 2 models are receiving a significant performance boost thanks to a new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery and an enhanced electric motor. These upgrades increase driving range by more than 60 km and deliver more torque for faster acceleration.

Explorer’s Driver Assistance Technologies 3 have also been expanded, offering greater support to the driver in a variety of scenarios. Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control 3 now includes Traffic Light and Sign Recognition, enabling it to respond to a wider range of everyday traffic conditions. Reversing Assist 3 and Park Assist with Memory 3 can support the driver during tricky reversing or parking manoeuvres, and the Driver State System 3 can now intervene in the event that the driver becomes incapacitated.

Pro Power Onboard 4 is a new feature that can power activities away from home, with the addition of a Vehicle-to-Load functionality including a socket in the boot and an optional adaptor 5 that plugs into the charge port that can power devices at up to a combined 2.3 kW from the Explorer’s drive battery.

The Explorer’s SYNC Move 6 infotainment system has also been updated with a new design theme that make it easier to find and use features, with expanded views of parking and navigation screens and the ability to group apps into folders to suit your preferences.

Explorer customers can also choose a new Travel Pack, which includes provision for a dog guard, an insert into the frunk to keep emergency items tidy and boot load net to support bulkier items, whether you are shopping for furniture or loading up with camping gear for a weekend escape.

Q: Tell us more about the new Explorer model.

A: Explorer Collection is the latest addition to the Ford Collection— a limited series of special models combining unique design with an enhanced specification.

We designed Explorer Collection to be the ultimate expression of Explorer’s adventurous spirit, taking inspiration from athletes and sporting equipment with its exterior and interior features to celebrate thrill seekers and adventure lovers everywhere.

On the outside, Explorer Collection is finished in Cactus Grey paint not otherwise available for the electric SUV, alongside a new 20-inch alloy wheel design in Satin Black. The new body colour really stands out next to a black roof, front and rear skid plates also finished in black, and distinctive door and rear pillar graphics— all combining for a more determined and driven presence.

Inside, Explorer Collection has Black Onyx as the main colour, contrasting with orange on the seat sides, lower soundbar and seatbelts. An eye-catching black and orange speckle effect is used across the dashboard and centre console, while the seats feature a unique 2D knit insert, reflecting the texture and appearance of high-quality sport clothing and equipment.

Q: What is the range improvement in the new Explorer?

A: With the new LFP battery, the Explorer Standard Range offers up to 444 km 2 of driving range on a full charge, an increase of more than 17 per cent compared to the outgoing Explorer Standard Range, giving drivers more freedom to travel longer distances between charges.

The use of LFP batteries also offers the benefit of using fewer high-demand raw materials compared to traditional battery chemistries.

Q: How has the performance improved?

The Explorer Standard Range benefits from an enhanced electric motor, increasing power to 140 kW (190 PS) 7 and torque to 350 Nm. 7 This improves responsiveness for the driver and allows Explorer to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds.

Q: Tell me more about the new Driver Assistance Technologies on Explorer?

Explorer already features a range of sophisticated Driver Assistance Technologies 3 to help take some of the strain out of driving in everyday scenarios, but the enhanced Explorer offers even more features that can help make your journey more comfortable.

Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control 3 already has the ability to adjust the vehicle’s speed depending on the surroundings such as speed signs, curves in the road ahead, junctions and roundabouts. The upgraded system now adds Traffic Light Recognition, so it can automatically slow or stop the vehicle if it detects a red or amber light ahead.

Ever met a vehicle coming the other way on a narrow road and had to reverse to a passing place? For many drivers, it’s one of their worst nightmares. Reversing Assist 3 is designed to support drivers in this scenario. It automatically records the vehicle’s path up to a distance of 50 metres, and controls the steering during a reversing manoeuvre, meaning drivers only need to operate braking and acceleration while watching the road behind.

Trained Park Assist 3 is another technology that can support the driver during anxiety-inducing manoeuvres — this time tricky low-speed parking. By learning previously performed parking manoeuvres, the vehicle can offer to take over and can automatically take care of acceleration, braking and steering to slot precisely into a parked position. The system can drive up to 50 metres while doing so and can store up to five different parking scenarios, to take the stress, strain and maybe even embarrassment out of situation.

The enhanced Explorer offers even more features that can help to make your journey more comfortable.

A further addition is the Driver State Assist, 3 which uses the driver facing camera and Lane Keep Assist systems to monitor the driver’s attention and driving inputs. If no steering input is detected it can tap the brakes to alert the driver. If the system continues to detect no driver input, it can switch on the hazard warning lights, bring the vehicle to a controlled stop, unlock the doors and call the emergency services, which could be vital in the event that the driver has suffered a medical emergency.

Explorer models now also come with one-pedal drive as standard, which can make floating through city traffic even more convenient.

Q: What is Pro Power Onboard?

A: Pro Power Onboard 4 gives Explorer owners even more freedom for adventure, with the ability to power the equipment from the SUV’s battery.

First introduced to some of our Ford Pro commercial vehicles, Pro Power Onboard turns the Explorer into a mobile power source that can feed up to 2.3 kW of combined accessories. One Pro Power Onboard outlet is located in the boot space so precious electricals such as laptops can be charged out of sight, and an optional adaptor 5 can be plugged into the charging port which is ideal for electric bikes and other outdoor accessories.

Q: What are the improvements to Explorer’s infotainment system?

A: Explorer’s SYNC Move 6 connected infotainment system has a 14.6-inch moveable screen with wireless Apple CarPlay 8 and Android Auto 8 compatibility as standard, and is now powered by new Android-based software for smoother operation.

The design theme has been refreshed for increased clarity and ease of use, with the ability to add apps to folders or combine them, so the drive can organise the most important apps however they want, just as you would with a smartphone.

The layout of the navigation and parking assist screens has also been improved to make it easier to operate at a glance, with the map area, camera portal and parking sensor displays all made larger.

Q: When is the updated Explorer range on sale?

A: The new Explorer range, including the Explorer Collection, is available to order from today.
