Everything You Need to Know About Ford F-150 Platinum

The F-150 Platinum has arrived in Australia, bringing luxury and serious capability to the local full-sized pickup market.

We sat down with Peter Zikas, product marketing manager for F-150 at Ford Australia, to find out why now, who it's for and what makes the F-150 Platinum different from anything else on Australian roads.

Q: The F-150 Platinum has been hugely successful in North America. Why bring it to Australia now?

Peter: Australia's full-size pickup market has been evolving rapidly. We've watched customers here develop increasingly sophisticated needs, they want serious capability for work and recreation, but they also want the comfort and technology they expect in their daily drivers.

The timing felt right because we're seeing Australian buyers who don't want to compromise. They might be hauling a boat to the coast on weekends, towing equipment to job sites during the week, but they also want their daily commute or long journeys, to be done in absolute comfort.F-150 Platinum delivers this with the plush seat materials and front massage functions. It delivers all of that in one package.

Q: What makes the Platinum different from other luxury pickups available here?

Peter: It's the approach to luxury that sets us apart. Many luxury pickups feel like someone took a work truck and added expensive materials as an afterthought. With Platinum, luxury was integrated from the beginning.

Take the exterior design,we went with an all-black.The gloss black grille, body-colour elements, and those stunning 20-inch painted black wheels create a sophisticated presence that feels confident rather than flashy. It'sluxury with purpose.

But the real difference is inside. Those front seats aren't just leather-wrapped1truck seats, they're wellness centres with six-way power lumbar, multi-setting massage in both the seatback and bottom, and they recline to nearly full-flat2. After spending 12 hours in a Platinum during testing, I understood why our North American customers rave about the comfort.

Q: Who is the target customer for the F-150 Platinum in Australia?

Peter: We're targeting what I call the "no-compromise customer." These are successful, hard-working business owners and recreational enthusiasts who invest in quality gear and professionals who need truck capability but refuse to sacrifice daily comfort.

Think about a successful builder who needs to tow heavy equipment but also uses their truck for client meetings. Or a recreational boater who spends hours driving to remote launch sites but wants the journey to be as comfortable as possible. These customers exist across Australia; they've just never had a product that served both sides of their needs this well.

Q: Which features do you think will resonate most with Australian buyers?

Peter: I'm excited about the cargo convenience features, honestly. The Lariat and Platinum both feature the Pro Access swing-door tailgate which solves real problems, whether you're loading from the side at a job site or need traditional drop-down access.

The Platinum’s auto power-deployable side steps might seem like a luxury detail, but they're genuinely functional. This is a big truck and making entry and exit effortless matters for daily usability. They automatically extend when you approach, then retract for ground clearance.

But what really excites me for Australian conditions is the Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) suspension. When you're hauling a caravan from Melbourne to Darwin, that suspension system transforms the experience. It actively manages the ride quality whether you're loaded or unloaded.

Q: How were the continuously controlled dampers (CCD) validated for Australian conditions?

Peter: We didn't just rely on North American testing data. Our engineering team spenta lot oftime understanding how Australians use their trucks differently, longer distances, varying road surfaces, different towing patterns.

The CCD system continuously adjusts damping based on current conditions. When you're pulling a heavy trailer across the Nullarbor, it delivers responsive, real-time composure and control. Butit'sequally impressive unladen, the system recognises you're not towing and adjusts for optimal comfort and handling.

We've seen feedback from American customers saying the ride quality is "extremely smooth" and it "smooths out dips and bumps very quickly." For Australian distances and road conditions, that translates to arriving at your destination less fatigued, whether you're working orrelaxing.

Q: What sort of driver assist features does F-150 Platinum offer?

Peter: F-150 Platinum offers a suite of driver assist technology features, including Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and lane centring, Speed Sign Recognition; technology that makes long highway drives significantly less fatiguing.Add Evasive Steer Assist, Intersection Assist, autonomous emergency braking (forwards and reverse)and front parking sensors, and you have comprehensive support.3

Indeed, in recent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) testing, the F-150 Platinum’s collision avoidance safety was rated as “the highest seen to date” by the organisation.4

Q: What does the launch of F-150 Platinum mean for the team in Australia?

Peter: F-150 is a global icon. It’s been the best-selling truck in America for the past 49 consecutive years. We’re excited that the top-tier Platinum variant is joining theAustralian lineup, alongside the existing XLT and Lariat models, providing a flagship luxury experience to our Australian customers. It represents our commitment to bringing world-class products to this market without compromise.

This launch demonstrates our confidence in Australian customers' sophistication. We believe there's demand here for products that don't force you to choose between capability and luxury.

Ultimately, the F-150 Platinum represents something more: a pickup truck that acknowledges Australian customers want it all, and we're prepared to deliver exactly that.
