Somewhere on Leg 3, in the tangled terrain outside Nakhon Sawan, Bailey Cole's Ranger Raptor went quiet.

Not the engine. The communication. A technical issue severed the thread between Cole and the route he was supposed to be following, and suddenly the No. 103 was off-course, losing time, losing position. In cross-country rallying, teams receive each leg's route book only the night before. There's no memorising. No second chances. You read, you react, you trust your co-driver. When that thread breaks, you're alone in the wilderness with 200 kilometres still to go.

Cole dropped to fifth in the T2A-D class. His teammate Michael Freeman, driving Ranger Raptor No. 121, held steady in third. And back at the service point, the team watched the GPS tracker and waited.

That was the low point of the Asia Cross Country Rally 2026. What happened over the next three days is why Ford Thailand Racing and Feeliq Innovation Motorsport are now team champions for the first time in four years of competition.

How did Ford Thailand Racing recover from a navigation failure on Leg 3?

The recovery started with Thai co-driver Sinoppong Trirat, whose navigation expertise guided the No. 103 back onto the course and through the remaining kilometres of Leg 3. It continued in the service tent that night, where mechanics pulled both Ranger Raptors apart, inspected every component, repaired what needed repairing, and had them ready before dawn.

By Leg 6, Cole had clawed back every lost position. He crossed the final timing gate in Phitsanulok first in the T2A-D class (production-spec. vehicles with safety equipment only) and fifth overall. Freeman finished second in class. Two Ford Ranger Raptors on the podium. A team championship secured.

"I didn't put pressure on myself because I knew every competitor came well prepared," Cole said. "I simply aimed to perform my best every day. I am proud to compete in a race suit carrying the Ford and Ford Racing logos. I believe in the performance of the vehicle and the capability of everyone on the team."

What engineering preparation was required to win AXCR in a Ranger Raptor?

The comeback didn't begin on Leg 4. It began months earlier.

Cole arrived in Thailand ahead of the rally to test in Chachoengsao, building familiarity with both the Ranger Raptor and the kind of terrain he'd face: flooded plantation roads, rocky mountain passes, the unpredictable mud of Thailand's rainy season. Both race vehicles had been refined over three years of learnings from Thailand Rally Raid Championship events, with Ford engineers adjusting everything from damping settings on the FOX shock absorbers to engine calibration for sustained high-temperature performance.

Freeman, who serves as team director of Feeliq Innovation Motorsport, prepared his body as carefully as his vehicles.

"This year, I was extremely determined for both Ford Ranger Raptors to win in class, so I prepared carefully in every aspect, especially physical fitness," Freeman said. "The rally takes place over several consecutive days and covers more than 2,000 kilometres, requiring focus, endurance and strength to control the vehicle. In the months leading up to the race, I trained muscular endurance while also taking care of my mindset and nutrition."

Four years of competing at AXCR had taught him what the jungle asks of a driver's body. This year, he answered.

How do Ford factory engineers use the 2,000 km AXCR course as a proving ground?

Every night after each leg, the technical crew worked under lights to ensure both Ranger Raptors would start the next morning in the best condition possible. Parts were inspected, swapped and tested. The RMA support team used a Ford Ranger Super Duty as their service vehicle, hauling spare parts, maintenance equipment and heavy water containers along routes that would challenge most trucks unburdened.

Their work gave Cole and Freeman something essential: confidence. The freedom to push hard, knowing the vehicle beneath them had been cared for by people who understood every bolt.

Meanwhile, Ford factory engineers embedded with the team treated each leg as a live data source, analysing engine performance and vehicle behaviour across terrain that no test track can replicate. For them, the 2,000 kilometres between Pattaya and Phitsanulok weren't just a race. They were a proving ground whose lessons would eventually benefit every Ranger Raptor owner who takes their truck beyond the pavement.

What did four years of AXCR competition build for Ford and Feeliq Innovation Motorsport?

This was Feeliq Innovation Motorsport's fourth attempt at the team championship. The first three years taught them how to compete. This year, they proved they knew how to win, even when the route disappeared, even when a co-driver's calm voice was the only thing between them and disaster.
