Why the New 2.3L EcoBoost Changes the Ranger Game in South Africa

The Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of South Africans. Built right here in Silverton Pretoria, it’s a vehicle that reflects the way South Africans live – resilient, versatile, and ready for anything.

With the 2026 refresh, we’ve taken that loved Ranger foundation and expanded it even further. Twenty-three derivatives across Single Cab, Super Cab, and Double Cab means customers now have one of the most comprehensive bakkie lineups in the market. But what excites me most is how the new 2.3L EcoBoost engine reshapes the driving experience.

This engine is a standout in our global portfolio and bringing it into Ranger, specifically tuned for this platform, was a deliberate move. We’re delivering 222kW of power and 452Nm of torque, 1 and what that translates to on the road is something special: effortless acceleration, smooth power delivery, and a level of refinement that truly elevates everyday driving.

Not every Ranger customer needs maximum towing or extreme off-road capability every day. Many are navigating urban environments, long commutes, or weekend getaways. The 2.3L EcoBoost speaks directly to them. It’s responsive, quiet, and athletic – perfectly suited for customers who want performance without compromise in comfort.

We’ve introduced this engine in key models like the new Ranger Sport and the Wildtrak 4x2, and it adds a fresh, dynamic personality to the range. The Ranger Sport represents a new layer of athletic appeal. It’s bold, feature-rich, and designed for customers who want a bakkie that feels just as good on the school run or city streets as it does heading out for adventure.

Of course, performance isn’t just about the engine. Pairing the EcoBoost with our 10-speed automatic transmission ensures seamless shifting and optimised torque delivery. It’s a combination that enhances both efficiency and driving enjoyment, something we know matters to our customers.

What’s important to me is that this isn’t about replacing capability, it’s about expanding choice. The Ranger still offers the proven strength of our 3.0L V6 turbodiesel for those who need serious towing and off-road muscle. But now, with the EcoBoost, we’re giving customers a refined, petrol-powered alternative that delivers a completely different, equally compelling experience.

Ultimately, the Ranger has always been about enabling people, whether that’s getting the job done, spending time with family, or exploring beyond the everyday. The 2.3L EcoBoost petrol enhances that mission. It brings a sense of energy and excitement that I think will resonate with a new generation of Ranger drivers.

And because it’s a Ranger, it’s backed by everything our customers have come to trust: advanced technology, proven durability, and the Ford Family Promise that supports them long after they drive off the showroom floor.

For me, this engine isn’t just a new addition - it’s a statement. A statement that Ranger continues to evolve with our customers, delivering more performance, more refinement, and more ways to experience what this iconic bakkie can do.
