My Obsession with Cars in Movies Drives My Wife Nuts – But I Can’t Help It

I have a confession to make. My wife hates to watch movies with me at home. I am constantly pausing the action to try to identify cars on the screen to see if they are a Ford.

There, I have it off my chest.

In all seriousness, amid movie award season, I have movies on my mind and the Ford models used in those films are a passion of mine. Every time I begin to work with the marketers on a vehicle project, one of the first things I do is look to see which movies have featured the car. Mustang project? How about Bullitt, Goldfinger, and Gone in Sixty Seconds. The list is endless. Falcon? That includes the iconic Mad Max. Even the Lincoln Continental had an underground role as the DeathMobile in Animal House.

One of my go-to websites to research cars in the movies is the Internet Car Movie Database where volunteers submit photos of vehicles identifying the title of the movie, video or television show as well as the importance of the vehicle to the plot of the story. It is also a great example of exactly how many Ford vehicles have appeared on screen as we have five of the top 10 vehicles. The Mustang, Crown Vic, Transit, Econoline, and F-150 represent the Blue Oval brand.

I am also fortunate because most corporate archivists are all part of the same professional association, and I have been able to work with and visit the archives of several major production companies. Whenever a question comes up about a car used in a movie, I can reach out to my peers to get the information at the source.

I was even invited to discuss the Skyway Mustang on a panel at the Disney D23 Ultimate Fan Experience last year. On display were other Ford models from the movies, including the 2006 Ford E-250 from Nomadland, the Model A from Absent Minded Professor and even the GT40s from Ford vs Ferrari.

The other way that we celebrate Ford vehicles in the movies is via our diecast collection. Yes, that is correct, if you visit my archives, we have two rows of toy cars documenting both the vehicle and the licensed product. With film award season in full swing, I searched the collection for Ford diecast that appeared in Oscar-winning and nominated films. The list of movies and diecasts are both impressive and eclectic.

I hope you enjoy watching the movie awards this season and that your favorite films of the year go home with the hardware.

Given it is unlikely there will be cars featured this award season, I won't be pausing the broadcast to take car pictures. And that will make my wife happy.
