Introducing the Ford Privacy Promise: You're in Control of Your Data

Even for a tech-savvy consumer, it can be hard to understand the relationship between your vehicle, the data it generates, and your privacy and rights. With our connected vehicle and app user communities growing every day, Ford takes its responsibility in safeguarding customer data seriously. That’s why, today, Ford is announcing the Privacy Promise.

Ford is launching the Privacy Promise to make an explicit commitment to customers that their vehicle data is safe with us and they’re in control of what they share. Our newly launched Privacy Promise website provides education on our privacy practices and how to customize your vehicle data and privacy settings anytime in-vehicle or via the Ford App.

Our Privacy Promise

We know that trust is earned. Protecting your personal information is one way we intend to earn it every day. Learn about our privacy practices by reading our Privacy Notices.

  • Your Privacy Is Our Priority. We design and build our products with privacy in mind — from collection of data to its use and storage and even disposal. This can include privacy-enhancing technologies like anonymizing or aggregating data to further protect your privacy.
  • Straight Talk About Your Data. We strive to provide clear and easy-to-understand information about how we use your personal information. This empowers you to navigate your privacy choices with confidence. Once you make those choices, we respect your decision.
  • You Drive Your Privacy Choices. We understand the trust you place in us every time you drive our vehicles and are dedicated to protecting your privacy. We believe using vehicle data to raise the bar on safety and quality is the right thing to do. We offer vehicle privacy settings that allow you to control what data you want to share, subject to the features and services you wish to enjoy. We also never sell data about how you drive your vehicle to data brokers.

Research Insights

As we created the Privacy Promise, Ford wanted to learn more about what customers understood about vehicle and data privacy.

We surveyed just over 1,000 U.S. consumers — both Ford and non-Ford owners. Our customers tell us that vehicle privacy is important to them.

As much as they value privacy, we also learned that customers understand the value of data sharing. A value our survey respondents kept returning to was control: the ability to adjust their settings on demand and in detail.

Survey respondents listed automakers as more trusted stewards of privacy than many other large organizations that handle data.

Ford customers, in particular, showed more comfort than non-Ford customers with tech-forward, connected solutions like smart home devices.

Ford uses your connected vehicle data (such as vehicle diagnostics, driving characteristics, and location) to power and enhance your driving experience. Specifically, this data is used to:

  • Provide Connected Services: Enable real-time features like embedded navigation, traffic updates, and Roadside Assistance.

  • Troubleshoot & Innovate: Diagnose vehicle issues, improve product performance, and support research and development for future technologies.

  • Personalize Your Experience: Offer products, features, and services that are uniquely tailored to you.

You remain in control of your information and can manage your data-sharing preferences at any time through your vehicle's center display.

No.

You absolutely can choose not to share connected vehicle data with Ford. However, in doing so, some features like BlueCruise, internet connectivity, and vehicle location data on the app will not be usable.

If your vehicle was made in 2018 or later, you should check your vehicle screen to customize your data and privacy settings.

Privacy resources for Lincoln customers, Mexico, and Canada will debut in the coming weeks, with more geographies to come.
