Ninety seconds. That's roughly how long it takes someone to unhitch a trailer from a towbar and drive away with it. I know this because I've spent years studying how people use – and lose – what they tow behind their Rangers.
For most Australian Ranger and Everest owners, towing isn't occasional. It's daily life. A work trailer loaded with $20,000 worth of tools. A caravan that took years to save for. A boat that represents every other weekend on the water. What's behind the vehicle often represents as much value – sometimes more – than the vehicle itself.
Trailer theft in Australia: the numbers are getting worse
In Victoria alone, caravan thefts increased almost 67% between 2022 and June 2024, with 174 caravans reported stolen. ¹ Car trailer thefts in the same state rose 25% over the same period – from 1,392 to 1,750. ¹ These aren't statistics from a decade ago. This is now.
What concerns me most isn't the scale. It's the speed. By the time most owners realise something has happened, the window to intervene has already closed.
That's the problem we built Trailer Connection Alarm 2,3 to solve.
How Trailer Connection Alarm works on Ford Ranger and Everest
The system is integrated directly into the updated 2026 Ranger and Everest's Perimeter Anti-Theft Alarm – no aftermarket bolt-ons, no third-party subscription. Once your trailer is connected, and has an active profile in the system, and you activate Trailer Connection Alarm 2,3 through the SYNC® touchscreen, it continuously monitors electrical loads within the trailer's lighting circuits whenever the vehicle is locked.
If it detects an unexpected disconnection, a tampering event, or abnormal electrical activity, it triggers the alarm immediately, and sends a push notification to the owner's smartphone via the Ford app. 4 Not after a delay. Not after a second check. Immediately. The goal is simple: create noise and attention before a theft can be completed. Because in most opportunistic cases, that's all it takes.
I'll be honest about what this isn't: it's not a GPS tracker. If a trailer is taken, you'll still need to report it. But what Trailer Connection Alarm 2,3 does is collapse that 90-second window into something a thief can't work within quietly. That distinction matters.
Ranger and Everest towing technology
Trailer Connection Alarm 2,3 didn't emerge in isolation. It sits within a broader set of towing features we've engineered for owners who tow regularly and take it seriously.
Integrated Trailer Brake Controller 3,5 synchronises Ranger's braking with your trailer's brakes – critical when you're stopping a heavy load unexpectedly on a wet road.
Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ 3,5,6 lets you steer the trailer using a control knob – turn it in the direction you want the trailer to go, and the system handles steering correction. It stores up to 10 trailer profiles, which matters if you're switching between a work trailer on weekdays and a boat on weekends.
Blind Spot Monitoring with Trailer Coverage 3,5,6 extends blind spot monitoring to account for the full length of a connected trailer – covering the significant blind zone that a rear-view camera simply can't reach.
Trailer Light Check 3,5 lets you cycle through all trailer lights from the SYNC screen before you leave the driveway. No second person required.

What this means for Ranger and Everest owners who tow
When I look at the full picture – active security monitoring, integrated trailer braking, assisted reversing, extended blind spot coverage, trailer light check – it represents something I'm genuinely proud of. Not because of the engineering alone, but because every one of these features came from listening to how Australian owners live and work with their Rangers.
Towing capacity tells you what a vehicle can pull. This technology tells you how well it supports you while you're doing it – and how well it protects what's yours when you walk away.
That matters. Especially at 2 am when 90 seconds is all that stands between a thief and your livelihood.
