Since launching our first version of BlueCruise, we’ve listened to customer feedback to continuously refine the hands-free highway driving experience across nine Ford and Lincoln vehicle lines, with model years dating back to 2021.
Among our lineup, Ford F-150 customers stand out as our most active BlueCruise users, logging more hands-free miles than any other equipped vehicle — 118 million miles in 2025 alone.1 However, with 76% of F-150 owners saying they use their trucks to tow, we recognized a clear gap in the experience.2
Now, we are closing it. For the first time ever, new Ford truck owners can tow hands-free on the highway with our newest feature debuting on the 2027 F-150: BlueCruise with Towing.3
This game-changing capability redefines the towing experience, whether you're hauling equipment to a job site or pulling a camper to the lake. Notably, the 2027 F-150 with available BlueCruise with Towing will also offer hands-free, eyes-on highway driving with up to 10,000 pounds of max available towing capacity when properly configured, more than other gas-powered pickups in the class.4
Quality First: Engineering a Seamless BlueCruise with Towing Experience
Our in-house Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) team has been continuously learning, developing, and iterating to deliver performance improvements and new capabilities — from Automatic Lane Change to now BlueCruise with Towing.
From an engineering standpoint, BlueCruise with Towing has been one of our most complex software developments to date. When towing, trailer weight, how the trailer is loaded, wind resistance, and sway affect steering feel and vehicle dynamics. Translating the variety of geographical and physical combinations into software that works with the driver to smoothly manage steering, braking, and acceleration in hands-free mode requires precision.
To meet our rigorous quality standards, we logged thousands of real-world testing miles across high elevations, tight curves, and high-wind plains, testing dozens of truck-and-trailer combinations with various weight and load distributions.
Simulation testing has proven to be a powerful evolution in our process. Through our Driving Dynamics Lab, we have exponentially expanded the scale of combinations and scenarios we can test, unlocking a level of thoroughness and precision that extends well beyond what can be achieved in the real world.
Designed to Support Responsible Use
Beyond rigorous testing, we thoughtfully designed BlueCruise with Towing to help create a confident hands-free highway driving experience while helping drivers partner with the feature to use it responsibly.
This includes:
- Unique Trailer Profile Required: Drivers need to create a unique trailer profile with accurate dimensions for what is being towed before using BlueCruise with Towing.
- Actively Monitoring Trailer Sway: BlueCruise monitors for trailer sway and will automatically slow the vehicle, limit speed, or transition to hands-on driving if it detects the sway persisting.
- Speed Limit Max: BlueCruise with Towing is capped at 75mph (without towing, the max speed is 80mph). As always, drivers need to confirm the applicable speed limit while towing.
- Continuous Detection — Weight and Tire Pressure: If the vehicle detects that the combined vehicle and trailer weight exceeds the allowed weight for BlueCruise operation at any time, the feature will not operate. Also, if the tire pressure monitoring warning light is or becomes active, BlueCruise with Towing will not function.
- Highway Access Only: As with regular BlueCruise usage, BlueCruise with Towing will only function on designated sections of controlled access highways (Blue Zones).
- Limited BlueCruise Features: Drivers will not be able to make hands-free lane changes while towing. Lane changes need to be made manually while towing. In-Lane Repositioning is also disabled, and if a construction zone is detected, the system will prompt drivers to put their hands back on the wheel.
Hands-Free Towing with 2027 F-150
We believe BlueCruise with Towing shouldn’t be reserved only for top-tier luxury trims; it should be democratized. Every 2027 F-150 that is BlueCruise-equipped will be able to access BlueCruise with Towing — we’re not gatekeeping it to certain high-end trims.
While the 2027 F-150 is our launch vehicle, this is just the beginning. We look forward to expanding this capability to other new vehicle lines in the future, giving more drivers the ability to use BlueCruise with Towing, whether it’s to help get work done or go on an adventure.
