Ford Credit Brings New Life to ‘Sign Here’

Think of all the places and ways you've signed your name over the years: on paper with a pen, through condensation on glass, in dirt with a stick.

We sign the closing papers to get a new home, a greeting card ahead of a loved one’s wedding or birthday party, and, of course, we sign our names to get the keys to a new vehicle. It’s a simple and relatively unexciting act that unlocks a future full of potential.

We wanted to re-create that otherwise mundane moment in a way that represented the true excitement that comes with a new vehicle. So, our Ford Credit team grabbed a couple of Ford vehicles and borrowed a some big pieces of real estate so we could put a new spin on the act of "Sign Here."

The word "Lucy" spelled out by tires in the Great Salt Lake Desert.

A few weeks ago, our team headed out to the Great Salt Lake Desert in northwestern Utah. We gathered a Bronco Raptor, a Mustang Dark Horse, some extra tires, a great crew and two amazing drivers with the goal of using them to sign on the dotted line.

OK, It Was Easier Said Than Done

Crazy idea? Maybe. More complicated than it sounded originally? Definitely.

Our advance team scouted locations where we could best complete the assignment. We needed plenty of room and just the right surfaces to make this work.

We eventually decided the Bronco Raptor would inscribe the name “Lucy” on the thick, crusty surface of a salt flat, while the Mustang Dark Horse would burn “R Jones” in rubber onto the surface of an airstrip.

Two professional drivers were included in the planning to explain the mechanics of getting the vehicles to perform the starts, stops and intricate turns necessary.

The team photographed the terrain from above and digitally overlaid the names, creating an intricate map. Camera angles were decided, and we were ready with backup vehicles and tires.

After weeks of meticulous planning, thankfully, we had good weather on the day of the shoot, and our drivers were ready.

As cameras rolled, our driver would create specific portions of the signatures using well-planned choreography and great skill. Our director would be in constant communication throughout, ensuring the driver hit the mark for each crucial shape in the signature.

Making Sure to Be Just Loopy Enough

First up was the Bronco — which was the perfect vehicle to handle the off-road terrain for writing Lucy.

In fact, it came equipped so perfectly that its off-road tires performed like champs. No tire changes were needed.

With limited daylight and a lot to do, our crew needed to make sure we captured specific parts of the signature. For example, the driver signing Lucy spent significant time creating the top loop of the “L” to be just loopy enough.

Then the Mustang drifted over the airstrip pavement and laid down R Jones in rubber.

We carefully selected the tires we were using — the rubber would be our ink after all — and sure enough, we went through three sets as the team captured the complex shapes for R Jones, including a swoop with dramatic flair at the bottom of the “s.”

After 12 hours of shooting every swirl, loop, donut and curve, a few bits were filled in by our video editors to create the magical effect of a vehicle signing a name.

You can see this strategy in the finished video, as we tease creation of the letters with a vehicle.

It All Comes Together in Sign Here

All this leads us to the introduction of our Sign Here brand campaign, starting with the Bronco Raptor and Mustang Dark Horse videos. Sign Here is the next step in our Ford Credit marketing journey and complements Ford's dynamic Ready Set Ford campaign.

We’ve spent a couple years with our marketing aimed at introducing ourselves to consumers, learning what they need and want, and inviting them to prequalify for financing.

Now, we’re taking our support of Ford sales to a new level with consumers.

So, take a few seconds to watch two great Ford products performing in exceptional ways to deliver the message that Ford Credit can help people get the vehicles that can help them pursue their passions by simply “signing here.”
