Ford Trucks Have Been There, From the Rink to the Great Outdoors

As someone who has spent the better part of my life on the ice, I’ve always appreciated reliability and a strong foundation. It’s no different when it comes to what I drive, and my connection with Ford trucks runs deep. They’ve been part of my story for as long as I can remember, a thread woven through the fabric of my family’s history and my own life experiences.

My earliest memories of a Ford truck aren't even my own, rather stories passed down from my dad. He remembers riding around with his grandpa when he was just six years old, helping out on the farm. Back then, everything was done in Ford trucks – chasing cows, building fences – all from the seat of an old Ford stick shift.

Fast-forward to when I was growing up, my dad was driving a Ford Ranger. That Ranger was more than just a truck; it was the trusted lifeline that got us to countless hockey practices and games, carrying us through the remote areas of British Columbia on seven hour round trips. Those long drives in the Ranger, often with me doing homework in the passenger seat, gave me time with my dad that I’ll never forget, while also giving me an early sense of independence and purpose.

When I started playing junior hockey, I’ll admit I did opt for a car, primarily for the efficiency. As a young adult trying to make ends meet, getting to and from the rink on a tight budget was a priority, though the itch to get my own truck never left my mind. After signing my first contract, at 20 years old, I knew exactly what I wanted – a brand-new Harley-Davidson Edition F-150. It just looked so cool – a limited edition truck that truly spoke to me. It was the first vehicle I ever bought for myself, and it felt like a statement – a practical one, but a statement nonetheless.

Throughout my career in Montreal, I owned several F-150’s, and Ford was a constant presence; there was even a Carey Price Edition F-150 at one point. It was a bit unusual at first, at least for my teammates. I remember going into the underground parking in my rookie year and many of the guys were driving sports cars, luxury sedans or premium SUVs. But over the years, something shifted; more and more guys started showing up in trucks. I like to think I might have been a trendsetter there.

While a half-ton could be a bit challenging to parallel park in downtown Montreal, it was the perfect escape. Living on the South Shore, I’d often head out for ice fishing trips on my one day off, throwing my tent and gear in the back and disappearing from the world for a bit. Montreal is a hockey town, and while I loved it, the attention could be relentless. My F-150 enabled escape, allowing me to connect with nature even in the midst of a bustling city.

Now, in my post-hockey life in Kelowna, with my wife and three kids under nine, my needs have evolved, and so has my truck. While I've enjoyed a couple of Raptors over the years, my Super Duty Tremor is the perfect tool for the job and life we have now. With a family of five, we're constantly hauling – we pull our 30-foot Airstream for regular camping trips, our boat, horse trailers, and even side-by-sides.

A diesel Super Duty is essential for all that towing. The spacious cab is perfect for our family, and the large box is indispensable, whether it's filled ski equipment for the slopes of Big White, hunting and fishing gear for trips with my dad, or camping supplies for the entire family.

Being an outdoors person – a fisherman, hunter, and general outdoorsman – my truck is an essential tool. It enables me and my family to enjoy all the things we love doing. We camp regularly, taking the Airstream to places like Arlington Lake or even making the four-hour drive to Northeast Washington for Fourth of July weekends on the Kettle River.

Dad and I also take hunting trips to the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. These are the kinds of experiences I've been waiting to do my entire adult life, as hockey always ate up Fall through Spring. It’s about putting food on the table in a different sense, connecting with nature, and finding that truly quiet place.

And when it comes to our kids, my wife and I are committed to getting them out into nature as well, away from screens, to foster an appreciation for the outdoors and the resources we are lucky to have in this country. Ford trucks have been instrumental to achieving that genuine connection throughout my life, from my dad's old Ranger, to my first F-150, to the Super Duty I have today. I like to think Ford has always been with us and will continue to play a key role in our lives, just like it has across generations in our family.
